The fourth mini-conference, hosted by the Forest County Potawatomi Cultural Center, Library and Museum, occurred May 3-4, 2012, and featured hands-on workshops on black ash basket-making, oral history projects, institutional advocacy, and exhibit interpretation and development.
Thursday evening’s activities included:
- Tours of the Forest County Potawatomi Cultural Center, Library and Museum
- Forest County Potawatomi database presentation with Samantha Smith
- Black ash basket-making workshop with Ed Pigeon
Friday’s gathering began with opening words from Jim Thunder, Forest County Potawatomi elder. Attendees then participated in several workshops:
- Dan Bartlett – “Meaningful and Relevant – Interpretation for Museums, Libraries and Museums”
Dan Bartlett is the Curator of Exhibits and Education at the Logan Museum of Anthropology at Beloit College where he is also an adjunct instructor of museum studies and teaches courses in museum education and interpretation, and exhibit design and development.
- Troy Reeves – “Developing Your Oral History Program”
Since June 2007 Troy Reeves has led the Oral History Program at UW-Madison Archives, where he oversees the key components of managing a program in oral history – collecting and curating oral history recordings, as well as communicating and collaborating with interested individuals – both on and off campus – about the art and science of oral history.
- Rural Library Project – “Advocating for your Institution”
Dan White, Director of Program Services at The Rural Library Project, oversees construction and project management services and community organizing outreach. Sarah Wynn, Director of Administrative Services at The Rural Library Project, is responsible for administration and works in community organizing and fundraising.
